Which Window Sizes Are Considered Standard in the UK?
No two homes are the same in the UK, as every house has its own individual shape and size, so standard window sizes aren’t applicable to all properties. Window dimensions are dependent on things like house type, its styling and its age, which drastically varies in some instances.
Hiring a well-trained window installer like TWC will guarantee that your windows are fitted precisely as we carry out thorough measuring beforehand. Sizing needs to be exactly right, otherwise you might be left with unwanted gaps.
This blog’s purpose is to alert you to the size charts for types of window frames, but before proceeding with that, here’s a question that needs answering: What are standard sizes?
Standard UPVC Window Sizes
An overwhelming number of UK homes are equipped with UPVC windows, infamous for having extreme durability and being highly affordable.
In the two lists that follow, we outline the standard double glazed window sizes for height and width:

-
19.2 inches / 488 millimetres

Standard Casement Window Sizes
An undisputed classic is the casement window, one of the most versatile styles of all. Loved in Britain, casement windows can be configured in a manner of arrangements to inhabit openings.
Common casement window sizes are listed below:

Standard Tilt and Turn Window Sizes
It’s pointless comparing tilt and turn windows to alternate window styles as they are a true one-off. Invaluable for ventilating homes, their opening mechanism makes cleaning the outer pane incredibly simple.
Single, double and triple glazed tilt and turn windows are typically sized as follows:
Single Tilt and Turn:
-
Min: 600 mm × 500 mm (23.6 × 19.7 in)
-
Max: 1900 mm × 1300 mm (74.8 × 51.2 in)
Double Tilt and Turn:

1219 mm (48 in)

Standard Bay Window Sizes
Bay windows are a prominent window offering, elegantly projecting outwards from a wall, which sees them beckon in masses of natural light. The flood of light gives a room a more spacious feel, and a bay window makes for a great window seat.
The standard window sizes in cm for bay windows are these:
Bay Window Standard Widths:
-
Min: 1016 mm (3 ft 6 in)
-
Max: 3200 mm (10 ft 6 in)
Bay Window Standard Heights:

Min: 914 mm (3 ft)

Max: 1981 mm (6 ft 6 in)

Standard Size Differences Between Materials
Standard window sizes will also be affected by the choice of window material and the amount of flexibility the selected design offers.
UPVC – Dual coloured UPVC windows will by large conform to standard sizes, which is why they’re so popular, aside from their affordability. Ordinarily, standard UPVC window sizes and the dimensions they have align with typical UK window openings, making for an uncomplex replacement.
Timber – Timber windows are easily customised to seamlessly integrate with period residences and conservation-located properties. Standard sizing may not be applicable because of bespoke craftsmanship.
Aluminium – Aluminium’s impressive strength belies how effortless it is to mould super-slim aluminium window frames containing a large glazed expanse. Replacement windows in aluminium are worth perusing if you want windows that are especially wide or tall.
How To Measure Up For New Windows
If you can turn up to your design appointment with some window measurements, it will give us a good indication of what sizes are required.
Our step-by-step guide tells you the process of measuring windows before e.g. new UPVC windows take over from your existing designs.
Measure from the outside
Take your tape measure outside of the house, as you’ll get more accurate measurements from the outdoors than indoors.
Take three measurements
The width of each opening needs measuring from the top, middle and bottom. Follow the same routine to ascertain the height – left side, centre and right side. Doing it in this way will account for any modest irregularities in the wall or window frame.
Check for squareness
By measuring diagonally from corner to corner in both directions, you will be able to discern if the window opening is square. Measurements that are roughly the same indicate there is the necessary squareness. If the measurements are very different, notify your window fitter.
Allow for fitting tolerance
There needs to be some fitting tolerance, so take that into consideration when you’re measuring. Knock 5-10mm off the width and height so that the installer has an opportunity to adjust and fit the window frame.
