UK Internal & External Door Size Chart

What size is a standard external front door?

As is the case with replacement windows, there’s no such thing as a single standard door size in the UK – rather a range of different sizes. In England and Wales, the common door width is 2’6” (30 inches or 762mm), but up in Scotland, doors are generally a bit narrower and measure an average of 28.5 inches (726mm).

What installers class as a ‘standard’ door varies between companies and can be influenced by the products they manufacture and their approach to fitting. We insist on tailoring every door sold at TWC and can easily handle any non-standard opening.

Why Knowledge Of UK Standard Door Sizes Helps

Although we craft our doors to order, it’s still good to have a grasp of common dimensions, especially so that compliance with Part M accessibility guidelines are met and the correct clear-opening widths fulfilled.

Being up-to-speed with standard sizing and the best colours for front doors will also work in your favour when chatting doors with our design experts.

UK Door Size Conventions: Metric, Imperial & Their Equivalents

Where standard internal door sizes in the UK are concerned, metric and imperial naming systems continue to be employed. For instance, doors at older buildings may be classed as “2 ft 6” by some suppliers, which is exactly the same as 762 mm in metric. Understanding both systems is handy for when you come to embark on a renovation or strike up conversation with a tradesperson.

Imperial sizes of 2’3”, 2’6” and 2’9” are common in England and Wales, but Scotland mostly prefers to use metric measurements, particularly at modern abodes, where 2040 mm tall doors are frequently requested.

Hopefully, this quick-reference table of common standard door sizes may prove helpful, including details of width and height in metric and imperial units:

Standard Internal Door Sizes (Most UK Homes)

Standard interior door sizes in the UK are heavily reliant on a 1981 mm x 762 mm slab. Alluded to as “2’6” × 6’6” in imperial, they manage an equal balance of width and accessibility, explaining their popularity in English and Welsh abodes.

We briefly touched upon the 2040 mm tall series, commonly employed at Scottish new-builds and in other areas. These are often stipulated by homeowners that seek a modern and lofty effect and typically come in widths such as 726 mm, 826 mm, and 926 mm.

Standard External Front & Back Door Sizes

Standard sizes across UK front and back doors are pretty consistent. Usually, external door dimensions commence from 1981 mm in height, ranging in width from 762 mm to 1020 mm. Sizes in this ballpark tend to conform to the majority of traditional door openings, ensuring that a replacement can be undertaken without complication.

Things have evolved a little though in recent times, with 2010 mm x 900 mm now regularly cited for standard external doors, especially by installers and manufacturers.

The design-minded are very drawn to even taller doors, such as 2040 mm and 2184 mm, to establish an entrance of significant scale that attracts focus.

Slab thickness differs between each door material type, in case you didn’t know. A timber door usually ranges from 44 mm to 56 mm, composite doors are around 44 mm to 70 mm and UPVC doors are a slimmer offering. Aside from contrasting looks, this impacts energy efficiency standards, security and hardware compatibility.

You should have no difficulty locating a great fitting door out of the many types of doors if you follow our guide to common external door sizes and materials.

Different Door Types Different Door Sizes

If you think there’s an awful lot of types of window frames, you’re not going to believe the amount of replacement doors that exist in the world, with varied sizes. Logic tells you that bi-folding doors and a traditional front door will have contrasting sizes.

Each individual style has an individual purpose, whether that happens to be marrying home and garden or strengthening security.

Accordingly, it’s convenient to know UK standard door sizes by door type to avoid running into any installation issues and save time.

Pair / Double Doors

Paired doors is another term for double doors, which ordinarily span from 915 mm (3 ft) up to around 1512 mm (marginally under 5 ft), and have a typical standard height of 1981 mm (6ft 6in).

They’re often chosen to occupy large internal openings and lavish entryways, needing matching leaves for a balanced aesthetic.

French Doors

French doors are rightly lauded as a classic and provide practical accessibility in and out of the house. The thickness of internal French doors is generally from 35-40mm, while external French doors are a bit thicker at around 44 mm.

The standard size of window in cm can differ, and the same goes for French doors, which vary from 36 in (approx. 914 mm) to 60 in (approx. 1524 mm) in standard door width UK. To increase the amount of glazed area, some homeowners will elect to have side panels included.

Sliding & Bi-Fold Systems

Overall door sizes for sliding and bi-folding doors rest on the number of panels they comprise and the width of the opening.

Something along the lines of 1800 mm wide is the usual size of a two-panel sliding door, increasing to about 6400 mm when seven panels are requested. Getting a suitable setup is vital in order for the door to fit into the aperture, also being mindful of stacking space.

Garage Doors

One of two sizes is the norm for garage doors in the UK – 1981 mm × 2134 mm (6 ft 6 in × 7 ft) and 2134 mm × 2134 mm (7 ft × 7 ft). They conform to most single garages and are often specified for up-and-over and sectional designs.

For installation of a side garage door, building regulations could come into play, offering a fire exit or escape route in an emergency if it’s the only access point into a property.

Fire Doors

Fire doors have stringent sizing requirements because of their importance. Imperial fire door widths are commonly 27 in, 30 in, and 32 in, with metric sizes normally following the 2040 mm height standard with widths of 626 mm, 726 mm, and 926 mm.

Frame setup is also influenced by fire ratings like FD30 (30 minutes) and FD60 (60 minutes). Compliance is also only achievable with intumescent seals, correct frame clearances and certified ironmongery.

Measuring Advice: Step-by-Step

With precise measurements, the whole process will run smoothly and see that your new door slots in perfectly. Obey this routine to get it done right.

Measuring for a replacement door needs you to measure the height and width of the opening, preferably from brick to brick or render to render externally. Record the height by measuring from the top of the aperture to just underneath the cill. You need measurements at three points (at the top, middle and bottom for width; left, centre and right to get the height) to avoid any irregularities and wonkiness in the frame. An order should be guided by the smallest measurement.

Measuring the door itself or internal reveal when an old door has been removed or where a new opening is sought may not prove entirely accurate.

With precision accuracy, you’ll reduce the fitting time, save cash and not have to go through the hassle of making a return.

The sensible thing to do is have TWC see to any measuring so that you don’t have to concern yourself with it and can just relax.

If it’s UPVC windows you’re after, we’ll happily attend to measuring up for those too!
