Is Your Perfect Front Door Made Out Of UPVC Or Is It A Composite Door?

Is Your Perfect Front Door Made Out Of UPVC Or Is It A Composite Door?

Getting your home’s entrance looking the way you want can be challenging. A great place to start is replacing your existing front door.

Your front door is one of the first things guests and passersby will notice about your home. It affects the overall character of the property and plays an important role in keeping your belongings safe inside.

If your front door is letting your home down with either its appearance or performance, replacing it should be made a priority, and if you’ve started looking for a new front door already, it’s likely you’ll have considered a composite or UPVC door.

Most individuals are familiar with UPVC doors, a popular solution with an insulated steel frame wrapped in un-plasticised polyvinyl chloride, but few can confidently describe what a composite door is.

Composite doors: what are they?

Just as the name ‘composite’ suggests, a composite door is made from numerous elements, manufactured using several different materials (UPVC, wood, foam, and a GRP – Glass Reinforced Plastic skin).

With a wood grain effect, the GRP skin may resemble a timber door in looks, but it performs in a way that’s much more resilient and watertight.

The strength and thermal efficiency of a composite door is unrivalled, making them an excellent option for TWC customers looking for a reliable front door with modern performance.

The different components of a composite door

What are the key differences between a UPVC and composite door?

Very different to a composite door’s unique construction, a UPVC door is only made from plastic. A composite door also has a bigger depth. The thicker frame of a composite door is about 44mm, compared with a UPVC door’s 28mm frame.

As composite doors feature more materials, they understandably have a higher price point.

Despite the increase in price for a composite door, a UPVC door is not a lesser product. If you choose a UPVC door over a composite door for your home, you’ll benefit from advanced security and energy efficiency.

How easy is it to clean and maintain a composite or UPVC door?

Both UPVC and composite doors require the same level of maintenance, which is very little!

After filling up a bucket with warm soapy water, you’ll need to clean the frame surfaces just once every four months. It’s important to avoid solvent based cleaners and abrasive materials.

Then, as an annual task, lubricate the hinges, locks, handles and door furniture.

Especially through times of bad weather, we recommend you check the door’s threshold and drainage holes for any debris.
